@Kristine
TNS Gallup filters out traffic from foreign IT-addresses, so they don't count. Our sales department focuses on Norwegian advertisers, and it would probably be too expensive to hire additional staff for English site.

Ad-Words and similar solutions doesn't pay enough, and we probably would not get enough traffic to attract other external advertising sales.

@Pål H
It might, but I'm not convinced. I try to write English versions of exclusive Norwegian stories here. It's a hobby project, and I don't want to spend my free time writing about something that's already covered by someone else.

The net is already filled up with too much redundant reporting. It's becoming annoying to read the same stories everywhere.

Could it be that an english blog for IT news and commentaries could be something to explore?

Interesting. Many issues to be explored here. As a journalist who work for both Norwegian and English/American clients I'm often struck by all the things international media miss. Newswires, for instance, tend to focus on the 20 biggest companies in Norway and miss sooo many stories 'cause all economies are relational, some of the most interesting things often happen on the margins: that's where you'll spot the interesting trends first. Perhaps there's a market for an english-language IT-news service from Norway, perhaps IT companies are so focused on english-speaking world that they make sure their news are out there. Not sure as it's not my beat. Could you have an english section on your site for instance? Would there be any business potential in that?

The Norwegian media-market is truly different. This is the way it works here. It might of course change in the future, but it will change much slower than in the English world.

I'm at a conference today, and will be writing a new post from a session by Schibsted's director of strategy. He goes a little deeper into this subject. I just have to write it in Norwegian first :-)

BTW: The newest numbers for VG Nett is 3. million unique each week.

Regarding traffic from search engines: do you work actively with these numbers? I feel your conclusion that the norwegian market won't find news through Google searches is a bit rushed.

My experience tells me that being conscious about your digital visibility and actively working with building links, and other digital marketing techniques (ppc ads for one) should give you alot more traffic from the search engines, even for norwegian services.

That being said, I feel your frustration in writing articles in Norwegian that may be interesting to others as well.
